A Welcome Message from Keith Hardy

Dear fellow Saint Paul residents and parents,

As I talked with a friend recently, she told me some of the reasons her children don’t attend St. Paul public schools. I was saddened and inspired—saddened that she perceived problems and practices in our public schools made them a poor option for her children’s future and inspired to run for the St. Paul Board of Education to help ensure no other parents feel they have to make that choice.

I have spent the past 15 years in education as:
1) an adult education trainer
2) an adjunct youth teacher
3) a mentor for youth and adults
4) as a curriculum designer.

During this exciting period in my life I have felt the joy of people learning skills, gaining knowledge and opening doors to their future because of the power of education. It’s a vital power that must be given to all St. Paul children.

In my work as an Information Technology professional at a Fortune 100 company, I know the need for young adults being prepared to use 21st century technology and yet have old-fashioned basic communication and computing skills. I am committed to working with the Board to ensure our youth are prepared in both of these areas.

When you review the duties of a member of the Board of Education, a key duty is to formulate and adopt policies for the school district. Another key duty is to examine and appraise the educational activities of the school district on a regular basis. I welcome the opportunity to help every one of our youth be prepared for a successful life by performing this duty with the other Board members.

I have been part of many other Boards of Directors for organizations that focus on educating youth and adults in specific areas of health, housing and aging, so I have the mindset and skill set to work on a team for the greater good of the community.

Another key duty is to provide the necessary funds for the operation of the school district. I have worked with great community leaders for five years as part of the Citizens Budget and Finance Advisory committee of the St. Paul Board of Education as we partnered with Board members and District staff to help the District with its budget. I have the necessary experience to review, discuss and prepare recommendations for a budget that makes best use of your tax money to further the education mission of the school district.

Finally, another key duty of the Board of Education is to provide for a two-way flow of ideas between the Board and the public. After 20 years as a communications professional, I am a conscientious listener who brings the variety of feedback, ideas and concerns from people to the decision-making table. I welcome the opportunity to listen to your fulfilling and challenging experiences with public education

Look on my Web site for key issues I want to focus on and an opportunity for you to send me other issues you feel the school board should focus on in the coming school year.

Thank you for your interest in my candidacy. Please vote to endorse me as one of the four DFL candidates for the St. Paul Board of Education on June 9 at the St. Paul city convention.

Peace and success to you all,
