As I traveled around the city during my nearly
11 months of campaigning, I saw and learned about
the many good things our schools are doing, including:
- The 180 Degree reading program at Open School
- The successful ELL classes and way cool smart board at Humboldt High School
- The eager learning of French by students at L’Etoile du Nord (and even
an autograph session with some!)
- The highly successful academic formula of early childhood education, parental
support, and high quality teachers and staff at Capitol Hill Gifted and Talented
Magnet
- The passionate leadership of the principal at Ames Elementary School
- The joy of learning in an arts-based environment at Creative Arts High School
Of course, I heard about and saw some opportunities
to make the good even better. What I found were
adults and students who are ready to roll up their
sleeves and work alongside the school board to
help make their school and St. Paul Public Schools
the best in the country.
It feels very good to be a school board member-elect!
I can’t wait to work with Elona Street-Stewart,
Kazoua Kong-Thao, John Brodrick, Anne Carroll,
Tom Conlon, and Tom Goldstein. I have observed
them in my years as part of the Citizens Budget
and Finance Advisory Committee, so I know they
are top-notch servant leaders for public education.
I congratulate my fellow newcomers who were on
the ballot as school board candidates: Jeannette
Gudgel, David Peterson, Kevin Riach, and Bernard
Ruppert. I hope they’ll continue to spend
time helping our schools and perhaps be candidates
once again in future school board elections.
My final words of thanks are to all those who
spent a few minutes to many hours helping with
my campaign. From donations of money, time, talent
and advice to pounding the pavement or dialing
the phone numbers along with me, I truly appreciate
everything you did to support my candidacy.
As I have said often during the campaign, I was
told early in my elementary school education that
I have two ears and one mouth—listen twice
as much as I speak. I live by that credo. So, never
hesitate to e-mail me (khardy63@yahoo.com) or call
me (651-497-8924) with your ideas, questions, concerns,
or suggestions related to public education in our
great city of St. Paul.
Let’s continue to work together to help
every child achieve the highest academic success!
